EVE: Swiss cheese syndrome
Posted in games on April 13th, 2010 by Roblob – Be the first to commentWow, it has been three weeks since my last post already. I knew it’s been a while, but I didn’t think it was that long. Time goes by fast these days.
My main reason for not posting is really that I haven’t been playing Eve much the past weeks. I could blame the new version of Dwarf Fortress but it is only partly at fault. I played Empire: Total War for a spell and then killed some zombies in Left 4 Dead, but gaming has really been a somewhat secondary (or tertiary) activity lately.
In Eve I’ve spent some time setting up skill training and some long term trades. It was only last week that I finally found the energy to get my deadly duo to the long planned wormhole hunt. Results have been somewhat disappointing.
All the world is blind to my passing
The plan was always to get one of my gals in a covops to do the scanning and the other in a stealth bomber to kill any juicy targets I might find. My stealthy approach was much inspired by the diaries of Genocide Machine on his Confessions of a Wormhole Killer blog.
Since Lass is far better at the helm of her Hound than Mynthea with her Nemesis the coin toss was passed in Lassies favor. Mynthea got into her Helios and started looking for a suitable entry hole.
My original idea was to keep scanning for high sec entry holes and only dip in for a roam before coming back out near my home base. It soon became apparent that this plan had the serious drawback of me not finding good holes in my neighborhood. Most holes seemed to lead to null or other high sec areas and so I decided to move completely into the first WH I could find and roam from there on out.
The first hole was a C3 which didn’t have any residents and only a null exit so I came back out in high for another look. Next hole was a C5 with a cataclysmic variable and while it too was empty of people it had an exit to a C3. In we went.
I’ve been combing the holes now for about three or four nights with no notable results. The only C3 hole with residents seemed promising for a while as I spotted a Mammoth, an Orca and some combat ships which immediately started scanning for me when they caught a whiff of my probes. I decided to let things quiet down for the night.
The next evening when I logged in the tower had been taken down and only some ecm modules remained. I have no idea why the corp decided to vacate the premises, but I waited by the tower for a while in case someone came back to pick the stuff up while I scanned for the next hole. No-one came.
Ghost towns
So far I’ve only really seen abandoned holes, with a few towers or modules left behind by past residents. It is beginning to dawn on me that it isn’t very easy to find targets in the wormholes. I’m sure my skills and tactics have a lot of room for improvement, but jumping on a mining op isn’t easy as you first have to find their island in a sea of wormhole systems.
I will keep searching for a while still and hopefully I can find someone to engage. I was considering making a raid to a null sec system if I came across a suitable hole, but from what I’ve understood it will be even more difficult to find bomber targets there as people will dock up as soon as a red enters local and wait for the cavalry to arrive. The whole solo PVP of Eve is beginning to look grim.
Low sec is the playground of pirate blobs and while it is probably the best place to look for solo targets it is still pretty difficult to actually find one. Null is not suited for a solo player for the above mentioned reasons and now that wormholes seem to be as bad as well I’m starting to feel the only thing left for me is PVE. Oh well, maybe things will better tomorrow.
